Cajal Portfolio: Focused Themes

This page features artwork I created about Santiago Ramón y Cajal through researching his scientific drawings on display at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, and as a Fulbright Scholar at the Instituto Cajal, Madrid, Spain.

I am creating a series of drawings and paintings titled Aesthetic Instincts: the Intersection of Art and Science in the life of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. It is an immersive, comprehensive, and multi-year development of an artistic, biographical project. By referencing primary sources at the Instituto Cajal, Madrid, Spain, and through visual art and creative writing, I am examining and representing the life of Santiago Ramón y Cajal (May 1, 1852 – October 17, 1934). I recreate, splice, and fuse drawings of his animated neurons, with biographical elements, fictional narratives, and surrealism representations.
